Farewell

At the end of Summer

There’s something like symmetry to the bookends of our lives.

We may exit this world the same way we arrived—kicking, screaming and covered in bodily fluids. Devoid of dignity. It can be an ugly, messy thing.

Death doesn’t terrify me, but dying certainly does. Watching someone you love suffering on their way out. The best you can hope for them is a smooth and well-planned departure.

It feels like there should be something more you can do for them. You can’t do anything, of course.

There’s no grand moment like in the movies; instead you may notice a jarring matter-of-factness to how fate can unfold something so significant.

And then it rained.

Thunder and lightning. A furious downpour falling on bleached earth after three long months of summer drought.

Just like in the movies.
